My name is Oakenkeg of Froth

Started gaming in the Fall of 1988 with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, subsequently explored some seriously fanatical gaming through Iron Crown Enterprises, Tactical Studies Rules, West End Games, FASA, White Wolf Publishing, Wizards of the Coast, Game Designers' Workshop and Chaosium Inc.

As for the material from Palladium Books and Steve Jackson Games, I have a lot of respect for the way these companies have helped role-playing. They are not necessarily my preference, but I am always happy to see folks playing them.

My association with Dak-Kon: I played in the 1995 Dak-Kon I, and was head chair for the 1997 Dak-Kon II, then was an original founding member of the Dak-Kon committee. After that I completely stepped aside from organizing multi-event gatherings. 2003, I returned to Dak-Kon with a lengthy script for the 3rd/3.5 D&D Tourney. In 2004, I was one of the GMs for 3.5 D&D. Following, I Co-wrote and GM'd 2005's 2nd AD&D. But today I strictly focus on participating as a player. Basically, I believe a person should pass the torch around and take turns at writing, GMing, playing, and organizing tourneys. Since 2006 I have dedicated myself to be a tourney player at Dak-Kon and plan to continue as such for a long while.

Other stuff: Previous to the new milenium, I worked and volunteered for several non RPG community events, which included organizing tournaments for ball hockey, crib, checkers and snooker. 2000, I started regular tourney writing/GMing, and was undefeated as best Game Master for an entire year with numerous tourneys from multiple genres through Upstart Comics & Games. With encouragement from Upstart's ownership and staff, I started running an independent role-playing event in 2001: "Annual Froth Barrel Tourney". The name pretty much says eveything, it is a tourney, not a convention, that's how it was on day one, and that is the way it shall always be. By 2002, David Baker (aka Field Marshall Strongkrotch) and myself co-founded The Froth Barrel Sodality, which is an Art Whore cult of gaming enthusiasts. As of 2007, The Froth Barrel Sodality continues to support and participate as players in public events, conventions and private invitational tourneys. As for our Annual Froth Barrel Tourney, it is Art Whoring, it is our style, it is FROTH.

As a Game Master: After 19 years in role-playing, I have discarded the use of rule books. My Game Master style is to make all dice rolls based on logical adjudication and negotiation with players. If its a good rule, then I have stolen it, if the rule doesn't make sense, then I don't use it. At my table the rules fluctuate based on what is needed - I am a veteran gamer who has learned the language and broken free from rules. Basically, if you understand jazz, then you will understand how I GM.

For RPG Collecting: My current interest is in Star Wars minis and tiles for use in space opera campaigning. Outside of that I tend to keep copies of tourney scripts and anything that might become published. And I always enjoy getting a nice set of dice or a cool SW mini for my campaign.

Notes as a Player: All I can say is, "What game are we playing?", maybe, "What dice do you want me to roll?", and, "Please pass the pop." Also, I am one of the old school players who believes in giving food tribute (encounter bribes) to the tourney game master(s). If any Frother attempts to offer you something from the canteen, accept the gift, or we will treat it as an insult against our Art Whore gaming culture. However, in instances such as allergies, it is not an insult to accept the gift and then simply return it do to a conflict in its ingredients. Outside of that, you can borrow my dice, providing you ask and promise to one day purchase your own set.

One of my favourite quotes: "Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." Which means, don't be impressed by me or anyone else who drops a bunch of names and claims a huge list of accomplishments. Anyone can poor fifty thousand beers, but that doesn't make them a good bartender. The person who is skilled and talented, is the one who does the job right. If you have never done this stuff, but think you can do a better job, then do it, we need good folks to contribute to our community.
