Is it too soon for such a thing, or am I just blind? Anyhow, if anyone can help me out, that'd be great. After admission you can take part in any event that's running with no extra fees. Once you pay to get it, you are in. No tourney fees or anything. Have contacted the host and asked them to post on the message board here with prizes and format. For the MAgic Tourney: We've been given a couple dozen Foil cards to be given out to the first two dozen entrants. These are only available at the tourney and can't be found in general elsewhere(so I'm told) As for the prizes we've got something for the four placements as follows: First place will be 19 booster packs and a d30 life die, 2nd will be 12 boosters and a life die, and 3rd will be 8 boosters and a life die. The fourth prizewill be awarded to one ofthe bottom ranking players. Might be the person in last, or best sportsman/woman, or possibly best deck concept. It hasn't been decided and won't be known until end of tourney. The prize for this will be a set of 80 deck protectors(with magic logo and pic of a fmale necromancer on backs) and a Deck box. Posts: 39 (02/02/09 12:50:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	In the past there were no fees beyond the entrance fee and the 'prizes' were all door prizes. The point was to make 'a bit more' than enough to cover the hall and promotional expenses. Dak-kon is not a corporation, so making big profits is a thing that must be carefully examined, otherwise the group will face significant challenges. The whole point of the event is to play...winning is fun too and not required to 'get' a prize. In the four years I was chairman I made it a point during the last two years to do a BIG door prize draw within the first 45 minutes of the event start, that way the others who were late got the message...show up on time or early if you want to get at the goodies. I am personally against handing out ANY product to tournament winners, the thrill of victory should be enough. Give out the goodies to everyone and you will see more and more young people attending and learning how to play the game better. Keep on rewarding only the winners and the 'loosers' will decide to take their energy and interest elsewhere.

Here's the dilema, thanks, mainly in part to WotC, Magic tournaments are known for the chance to win something (beyond recognition and a medal) for placing in the top three. The bigger the prize, the more hardcore the gamers trying out. If we were to cut out the prizes for the Magic Tourney then we will find that only half a dozen people show up, and those are the best type of players as they play for the sheer enjoyment of playing. If we have to large of a bounty then we won't get those players who really enjoy playing magic just to play. The balance becomes finding the bounty that brings out both people and have something for even those that aren't in it to win but have fun. I hope I've done that this year but we can only see. The prizes aren't huge ut there's lot's of fun to be had by all. No two age distinctions like before, just people who like to play magic, playing others who like to play magic of all different ages and skill levels. Hope this will attract the casual players while at the same time stoping those people who are only in it for the prizes from coming out. (I guess that is kind of a challenge because if you don't show then you are merely proving the point that you are one of those greedy Card Players. The Superbowl (hey, does anyone think the winning team's wages tend to be overpaid?), for example. Or take a high profile card tournament, like Poker. If Poker was played simply for the thrill of winning, casinos would go out of business. The same would go for most professional sports and many competitive recreational games. Without the allure of something to bring players out, other than the thrill of victory, many players will elect instead to play casually. It simply makes sense - think about an average player for Yu-Gi-Oh! in Victoria - they have to pay to drive up there (let's say gas there and back is $30 or so), and then they pay $15 for the day to enter the convention - so they're looking at $45 to play for the "thrill" of winning and then returning home. Now, that's not even factoring the fact that the average Yu-Gi-Oh! turnout up in Courtenay seems to be about 4 to 6 players at most; so they don't even have that many more players to play. Now - factor in the fact that the same person could pay $10 to walk on the ferry (and another $5 for the bus) to go to Vancouver, play in the Regional, possibly winning about $300+ in prizes and an invite to Nationals, and meet about 100 players or so - and then return home for another $15 - it just won't "be worth it" in that type of player's mind. And if they simply enjoy the thrill of victory - why not play for free with friends at a local gaming store or by staying at home? Or heck, turn on YVD (online program for card gaming) and play people online for free. If there will be prizes other than the thrill, please let me know. I am trying to give honest constructive feedback here, and I hope that you understand - prizes will encourage (card players) players from Victoria to drive up north. If there are none, they will not show. It's as simple as that.

This value MUST be included in the factoring of cost and decision to 'give' only prizes to winners. The young players from 'up north' have to travel just as far and actually LONGER in time (to be on time on Saturday they either come Friday night and stay over or leave from home at 2 am). They do not have the constant play opportunities that exist in the larger centers. Expecting them to do all that travel then PAY again to only watch the more practised players walk away with all the goodies is too much in my view. Dak-Kon is NOT THE SUPERBOWL. It is not even a college bowl. It is barely a high-school game. Think about it...the high-school football players have to get their own kit, get to the game on their own and somehow a volunteer coach has to be able to get them to have some fun and maybe win. I totally disagree with the argument that the best players only come for the goodies. We started with 8, I will say it again EIGHT players in the magic tourney because only the 1st and 2nd place winners got anything, every body else was left out in the cold. From that point for the next 6 years we grew the event from 8 to 58 attendees (the high point at Dak-Kon XI) in the Magic tourney, and ALL WITHOUT GIVING ANY MAJOR PRIZE TO THE TOURNAMENT WINNERS. By the end of that year's tourney I was seeing old players giving free advice and great game tips to new young players ~ there was an excitement about the game...just the game. No thrill of victory or agony of defeat ~ everybody having fun. FUN is the heart of the Dak-Kon ALL VOLUNTEER EVENT. NOT A CORPORATION. NOT A MAJOR MONEY MAKING FUNCTION. Please do consider these issues, once Dak-Kon turns the 'we must make money' corner I think the volunteerism will turn a corner also.

That is what I am trying to do. This year I think we've got half the prizes as the year before and probably next year we'll cut it again by half and keep it at a nice medium. It's a simple line, and I don't think it's untrue. While you may have an increasing attendance due to the popularity of your event, prizes will attract more players on top of your already growing base. I certainly do not believe that giving away prizes will deter people from attending - if anything, it should have a positive gain on attendance. This is a suggestion. Dak-Kon can do as it likes with it, but I believe that I'm allowed to have an opinion, and you yours, and that there is no need for people to be upset.

SkyGames understands the reality of business; the large prize is current with the card circuit that is actively occuring around the world. On the other hand, Dak-Kon has been a project of love, that has resulted out of a lot of gamers using their own personal funds to make something exist for islanders. Dak-Kon would not be around if it was not for Richard at ABC Books; with his blessings, gamers from the island were given an opportunity to form a community to run annual Dak-Kons. To date, Dak-Kon is completely the work of volunteers, who get no other reward than to see their favourite hobby celebrated in the Comox Valley. Now, last weekend I was at GottaCon and it absolutely rocked, and it was clear what serious money could do to make an event awesome. I was so impressed with GottaCon, that I'm already making plans to stay over night next year and just load up on the events. However, having been to Dak-Kon and GottaCon, it is more clear than ever that these two events use completely opposite methods to create the same fun. I've been to 10+ Dak-Kons, occasionaly hit the mainland events, been personally co-run my own cult tourney for a decade, and just checked out GottaCon. And as far as what we've seen in the magazines, all the issues of US gaming events we've ever looked at, GottaCon is the only event in BC that I have seen nail the setting so well. And while I've never had the money to attend GenCon, outside of gaming I have worked sporting tradeshows, and my family has to do Vegas cons for the ski industy. Due to this background, I've always known that Dak-Kon was not a big city convention. In fact, ine of the original Dak-Kon Commitee founders (that viking who always cheered for Sweden) repeatedly made a point about making certain everyone understood this fact; and while a lot of us would love to see it go 48 hrs non-stop, the city laws have long prevented Dak-Kon from having the options to grow into a longer event. This being said, as a gamer the only thing I ever wanted was a killer session, and I have to testify that last year's Dak-Kon was one of the most amazingly wonder times I've ever had in the event's history. Now with prizes....facts are facts: If you want poker players, then yes you need a big pot, but to get that you need a lot of poker players working all year to make the big prizes happen. Having been all over every nook and cranny of this island, there is no doubt that the Comox Valley has the highest per capital of role-players vs. all other games (CCGs, Table Top, Board Games, Computer RPGs) on the island. There is no where, not even Victoria, where there are more secret groups, playing some damn rpg for a kazzilion years; Comox Valley is the cult-land of rpgs, and good luck getting in if you don't know the password. Now everywhere else on the island, CCGs, minis, warhammer, all the "$$$" style gaming reigns supreme. If you spend any time in Nanaimo, like I do, it's clear that this town is dead when it comes to rpgs, yet warhammer and minis are healthy. In Victoria, the merchandise based games are super successful (obviously thanks to SkyHaven, GW and Curious Comics), because these places need to make money, and the best way to do it is pump out events where your players require more purchases. Damn I salute these guys, I have total respect for anyone who puts that much work into their craft, and let's be fair, the people are paying rent based on how well the products sell. But the reality in Courtenay, is that it is not Victoria, they are two different worlds. Up-island, the old school rpg guard is bigger than life; and because of that, the majority of the volunteers who put any time in to make Dak-Kon happen to have serious rpg backgrounds. As a result, prizes do not have the same importance as at the city events. Now it is killer awesome to win dice, books, minis, cards, that's always exciting, and fun; but it's not fun when you watch an entire event's budget go to look after the prizes of the card players. As a gamer, I like shiny things as much as the next person (maybe more), but the deep rooted role-player personality tends to bring a different perspective to our gamer mindset. If you're tossing away prizes, then all players want a cut, but overall I always find that this is a very brief joy that quickly fades. In ten years at Froth, we've handed out dozens of swords, hundreds of rpgs, just a stupid amount of money in prizes, and the only ones people talk about are the stuff we invent (like the 70s Pimp Canes.) And as far as my experience as an attendee, you know my absolute favourite prize from any gaming event is the home-made framed map I recieved a couple years back - ever since winning it, that map has remained one of my greatest treasures from all my years of gaming as a player. Having shared in dumping that small fortune on prizes for Froth, I can testify that you learn to become more discriminating about what you donate to events; if you give a prize and do not feel the response was appropriate, then you never ever offer those pearls again. And this is where the problem is biggest: most old-school gamers wants something cool, which is not always something expensive; CCGers want the jackpot prize, and the prestige of having been to an event with such a big prize, because it most likely lured major players. It's always going to be different for gamers who sit on opposite sides of the fence. If we are are playing for magic cards or money, then the prize does matter; however, if we're playing for the sake of hardcore gaming, well that's something totally different. A fanatical gamer, games because their passion demands that they be engaged in their favourite hobby; these are the customers that give a business street-creditabilty, but rarely will they provide the money that sum 14 year old kid will spend. The mainstream circuit, that has the huge backing of Wizards and GW, belongs where the prize matters; but where that corporate backing does not exist, then the prize should be the least reason for holding the event. For as long as some gamer, who is also trying to feed his/her kids, has to do all the work, well the prizes are going to have remain simpler; but if someone else want to empty vault and jack up the prize pot, then so be it. If the business community in Victoria wants to volunteer their time and money to bring Dak-Kon CCGs in line with the city events, well then awesome. But it has to be understood that the folks in the Comox Valley don't play for prizes; this is an rpg cult community, and they game for the sake of gaming and no other reason. If you want major prizes for collectable strategy gaming, then you need a person with business mandate to make that happen. Okay, I just want to say that as a person who really likes the vibe of Vancouver Island's gaming scene these last 12 months, I want to say that we should be enjoying what makes each event unique and not be concerned about matching each other's standards. When GottaCon showed up on the net last year, started talking big, my response what "put up or shut up"; well GottaCon did put up, they damn well put up a simply wonderful event, and I tip my hat in congratulations. I hope next year, we can get several vans of gamers from up island to attend GottaCon. I also hope, Star Wars fans will continue to grow in attendance at Power of the Force, and that Dak-Kon will continue to celebrate its own small town cult style gaming. Heck I'm a Frother, a member of The Soldality, and really shouldn't care if you all fight it out, but I would rather you didn't. And why? Because gaming on Vancouver Island is the healthiest I have ever seen it, and we could be beginning a golden age for our gamer circles! We stand at the chance to see Vancouver Island gaming rise to new heights never before imagined; but to do so, we need to be able to appreciate the diversity of the many different approaches to our most wonderful pastime. Nor am I bringing up Skyhaven Games in the topic. We are not "fighting it out". I did not pick a fight. I do not understand why this is being treated as such. I am not saying Dak-Kon is bad, I am not saying our local convention is better. I don't really care about these political issues, and that is entirely not the point of my post. I am simply stating as an individual who wishes to attend an event in Courtenay, I would be able to bring more people from my local area to come if there are prizes. I have added that paying an additional tournament fee would be met with acceptance - most likely expected, even. I am a gamer. I travel to play games. I would like to know what fees and prizes are to be expected when I travel to an event. If there are none, I try to figure out why - perhaps it can be changed, as my preference is to have them. That is all. I am not here to spark some sort of war.

I'm responding to what gets posted, while hoping to remind everyone of the island's gaming dynamic; hence, something is getting lost in the translation from what I read versus what gets typed. If this is the case, then obviously the meaning of these posts is being totally misinterpreted in the wrong way, and that's MY bad. In the end the only thing that really matters is whether we are having fun, and I can tell you that this last year has been an absolutely stellar year for the camaraderie at public events. If we are all getting along, then great, because I like playing at these events and am so excited about what's happening these days. Looking forward to Dak-Kon XIV Good Gaming! Having been an organizer for Dak-Kon for 5 years I can honestly say I understand the desire to raise funds, to charge more for events (even if you give it mostly back as prizes) and to maintain a 'healthy' bank balance. Yet I learned immediately that to do this with Dak-Kon you will get an immediate 'push-back' from the volunteers and that the participation rate in the event as a whole will drop. I watched with satisfaction as we changed a 'big money prize' event into a 'medal' event and saw a more than 700% increase in attendance. We need to honor and remember where we, as Dak-Kon gain our strength from. By charging more for the events that our newest and youngest attendees might want to participate in we will be disrespecting where we built from and dishonoring our volunteer strength. I want us all to celebrate the volunteer spirit that has kept Dak-Kon functioning for 15 years. For those whom wish to give a different game experience to those whom are used to games events with many prizes, ask them, "Want to come to a game event with heart? Where the organizers and attendees are all playing because they love to play their games and share that energy." I look forward to taking part in this year's event and seeing Dak-Kon continue for the enjoyment of my sons. Come share our energy.
